The French hotel industry and dogs: state of play
France is one of the most welcoming European countries in terms of dog-friendly hotels. Many chains and independent hotels allow dogs — with a few rules and a fee. However, not all brands are equal : access policy, weight limit, prohibited areas and hidden fees vary from one establishment to another.
Comparison of major hotel chains
Policy may vary from hotel to hotel within the same chain. Always check when booking.
| Chain | Dog friendly | Weight limit | Supplement / night | Room restriction | Breakfast |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accor (ibis, Novotel, Mercure) | Yes (majority) | Variable (often none) | €10-20 | DRC often suggested | Room: prohibited (terrace OK) |
| Best Western | Yes (90% of hotels) | Depending on hotel (15-30 kg) | €10-15 | Subject to availability | According to hotel |
| Logis Hotels | Yes (very common) | Rarely limited | €5-15 | Rare | Often OK in the gym |
| B&B Hotels | Yes | None | €8-12 | Dedicated rooms | Banned indoors |
| Campanile | According to hotel | 15 kg (frequent) | €10-15 | Variable | Banned indoors |
Book a hotel with your dog
Never rely on website information alone. Here is the method to avoid unpleasant surprises.
On Booking, filter “pets allowed”. On the channel's website, look for the FAQ section. But don't stop there : this information is sometimes obsolete.
Call reception, not the chain switchboard. Ask: “Are you dog friendly?” What size? What supplement? » Write down the name of your interlocutor.
Be transparent about weight and race. A 35 kg Labrador will not have the same reception as a 7 kg Cavalier King Charles. Some hotels exclude categories 1 and 2.
More practical for nighttime pee trips, less nuisance for neighbors. Mention this as a preference when booking.
Arrive as soon as check-in opens. A well-behaved dog on a leash on arrival facilitates special requests.

What the supplement covers
- Reinforced cleaning : hair suction, anti-allergen treatment, deodorization. This item represents 60 to 70% of the supplement.
- Accelerated wear : scratches on the carpet or furniture. The hotel provides a portion for minor repairs.
- Damage insurance : coverage against significant damage. Some hotels prefer a separate deposit.
- Equipment provided : in the best hotels, the supplement includes a bowl, mat, welcome treats or basket.
Some hotels display a low supplement (5-8 €) but require a deposit from 100 to 300 € on arrival, returned after inspection. Others charge a cleaning fee of €30-50 on top of the nightly supplement. Always ask for the total cost during your call. Request written confirmation by email.

Frequently asked questions
Can we book a room for 2 dogs in the same hotel?
It is possible but rarely guaranteed. The majority of channels accept only one dog per room. For two dogs, you often have to book two rooms or find a more flexible independent hotel. Some Logis and B&Bs accept two dogs for a double supplement. Always call to verify.
Can you leave your dog alone in the hotel room?
Most hotels formally prohibit it because of the risk of barking. In practice, if your dog is calm, some tolerate a short absence (1-2 hours). Always ask permission at reception. Never leave an anxious dog alone — this could lead to expulsion.
Airbnb or hotel: which is better for a dog?
Airbnb offers more space and often a garden — but the rules vary from host to host. The hotel guarantees a clear framework and a central location. For a short stay in the city, the hotel is more practical. For a long stay in the countryside, an Airbnb with a fenced garden is unbeatable. Check out our guide to lodgings and rentals to compare.
Are there any palaces that accept dogs?
Yes, and they are often the most welcoming. The Ritz Paris, the Bristol, the Negresco in Nice welcome dogs with a dedicated service: premium basket, dog menu, dog-sitting. The supplement is higher (€30-50/night) but the service is exceptional.
