Atlantic coast: the dogs' favorite
From Brittany to the Basque Country, the Atlantic offers the most dog-friendly beaches in France. Large expanses of sand, fresh wind even in summer, and an outdoor culture naturally welcoming to dogs.
Channel coast: the dog-friendly secret
The Channel is perhaps the most underrated coast for canine travelers. Few crowds, cool temperatures even in summer, spectacular cliffs and beaches often accessible to dogs year-round.
From Étretat to Tréport, the chalk cliffs offer spectacular coastal hikes with your dog. Pebble beaches are rarely prohibited to dogs, even in summer. Very affordable cottage accommodations. The GR21 runs along the cliffs for 180 km — a cani-hiking dream.

Frequently asked questions
Are all Mediterranean beaches prohibited to dogs?
No, but they are more restrictive. Most supervised southern beaches prohibit dogs from June to September. But unsupervised beaches, coves and beaches outside resort areas remain accessible. Beaches before 9am and after 7pm are often allowed. Our beach directory lists the exceptions.
Can my dog swim in the Atlantic Ocean?
Yes, but beware of currents and rip currents. Never let your dog swim alone in the ocean. Bay beaches (Morbihan, Arcachon basin) are calmer. A life jacket is recommended for inexperienced dogs.
The GR34 in Brittany with our dog is our annual pilgrimage. 2 weeks, 200 km of coastal trail, beaches for him at every stage. Paradise.
