Preparing for a market trip with your dog

1
Identify quiet times

Arrive early, ideally at opening time (7am-8am). Sparse crowds, clear paths, less stressed dog. Bonus: best products and merchants available.

2
Short leash and permanent control

Leash of 1 to 1.5 m maximum — never a retractor. Your dog walks next to you, opposite the stalls.

3
Water and portable bowl

Carry at least 50 cl of water and a collapsible bowl. Offer water every 20-30 minutes, especially in summer.

4
Avoid narrow aisles

Favor wide aisles and exterior perimeters. Narrow passages between two stalls stress the dog and bother others.

5
Pick up and be exemplary

Bring 3-4 bags minimum. An uncollected incident may lead to a ban on dogs from the market.

Events and trade shows with your dog

Agricultural Show (Paris, February-March): pet dogs are not not allowed in the halls (sanitary reasons, presence of livestock). Exception: assistance dogs and dog competitions.

Game Fair (Lamotte-Beuvron, June): large outdoor hunting and nature exhibition, dogs on a leash accepted. Hunting dog demonstrations, green spaces. Ideal for dogs accustomed to the outdoors.

Dog events : France has hundreds of events dedicated to dogs: SCC exhibitions, cani-cross, cani-rando, Dog Shows. By nature dog-friendly, ideal for socializing your dog.

Christmas markets : the Alsatian and Lorraine markets (Strasbourg, Colmar, Metz) allow dogs on a leash in the exterior aisles. Favor visits during the day, during the week. Protect the pads from road salt.

Ground Hazards

In a market, the ground is littered with dangerous temptations: chicken bones (intestinal perforation), chocolate (toxic), onions and garlic (toxic), remains of skewers with wooden picks, cigarette butts. Keep a constant eye on what your dog is sniffing. Dense crowds can stress small people — wear them if necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Is my dog allowed in an indoor market?

This depends on the internal regulations of each market. The markets covered are ERP and may prohibit animals for hygiene reasons. In practice, many tolerate small dogs in carrier bags. For large dogs, this is often prohibited. Ask the town hall or manager for more information.

Can I tie my dog outside during the market?

Strongly not recommended. A dog tied alone is stressed, can become aggressive, and is at risk of theft (increasing). In summer, risk of heat stroke. Take a trip with a companion or leave your dog at home.

Is there a calendar of dog events?

The website of the Central Canine Society (SCC) lists official exhibitions, Cani-Sports lists dog sports competitions, and regional Facebook groups announce local gatherings. For flea markets, consult vide-greniers.org And brocabrac.fr.

Do Christmas markets allow dogs?

The majority of outdoor Christmas markets accept dogs on a leash: Strasbourg, Colmar, Metz, Lille, Reims, Rouen. Covered spaces may restrict access. Favor visits in day, weekday. Protect the pads from road salt with wax.
