Parks and gardens with your dog: what you need to know

In France, dog access to public parks and gardens depends on municipal orders. There is no single national rule: each municipality sets its own conditions. Paris is rather restrictive, while many provincial cities are much more welcoming.

Dog parks (caniparcs): canine paradise

Caniparcs are fenced and dedicated spaces where your dog can run freely in complete safety. More and more cities are creating them — it's a criterion of urban quality of life.

What you'll find in a good caniparc
  • Double security gate (entrance airlock)
  • Water point for dogs
  • Separate zones for small/large dogs
  • Benches for owners
  • Waste bag dispenser
  • Draining surface (gravel, grass, wood chips)
Caniparc rules

Even in an off-leash area, stay vigilant: monitor interactions, recall your dog if they're too insistent, and don't leave small dogs with large ones if your caniparc doesn't have separate zones. Remove the leash upon entry to avoid tension.

Paris: a special case

In Paris, dogs are prohibited in most public gardens (Luxembourg, Tuileries, Palais-Royal…). But the city has more than 70 dedicated dog areas. Look for the green "espace canin" pictogram in parks.

Frequently asked questions

Can my dog go in children's playgrounds?

No. Children's playgrounds are off-limits to dogs in all French municipalities — it's a matter of hygiene and safety. Respect this rule even if the area is empty.

What's the risk if I don't pick up waste?

A 3rd class fine up to €450 (€68 standard fine). Beyond the fine, it's the #1 action to keep parks open to dogs.

Are category 1 and 2 dogs accepted in parks?

Yes, under strict conditions: muzzle mandatory and short leash. Ownership permit must be available at all times. Some municipal parks have additional restrictions — check local order.

Can I let my dog off-leash in a forest?

It depends. In state forests (ONF), dogs must be kept on leash from April 15 to June 30 (nesting period). During hunting season (September to February), leash is strongly recommended or mandatory. Outside these periods, tolerance is generally the rule in forests.

Dog parks have changed our daily life. My dog gets exercise, socializes, and I meet other owners. It's become our daily meetup.
